Can first phalanx multivariate morphometrics help document past taxonomic diversity in South American camelids?

چکیده
South American Camelids (SAC) were of great economic and cultural importance for pre-Hispanic societies in the Andes still are important rural Andean communities. However, understanding their specific role function over time is hampered by lack reliable taxonomic identification archaeological remains. Although this problem has been acknowledged since 1970s, SAC from contexts mostly relies on first phalanx multivariate morphometrics developed Kent 1982. The goal study to further explore potential method using a machine learning approach including new measurements phalanges modern Peruvian, Bolivian Argentine with additional taken literature. Results have shown that fore reliably distinguish wild guanaco vicuña, but distinction between domestic forms relatives remains tentative despite statistics. This largely due limited comparative material, especially alpaca, also underlines presence an intermediate size morphogroup among SAC. Morphometric variations recorded greater than those current SAC, preventing specimens. These results emphasize need improve measurments data base develop multiproxy approaches camelid diversity directly material.

متن کاملReproduction in South American Camelids
All camelids (including the Bactrian [2 humps] and Dromedary [1 hump] old world camels) have a diploid number of 74 chromosomes. Interbreeding can occur between any of these species, producing fertile offspring. In llama and alpaca are occasionally interbred, producing an animal with longer but coarser fibre length than Alpaca. These are known as Huarizo. Using artificial insemination between o...

The development of assisted reproductive technologies such as embryo transfer (ET), artificial insemination (AI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) in South American camelids is considerably behind that of other livestock species. Poor success of the embryo transfer technique has been related to a lack of an effective superstimulatory treatment, low embryo recovery rate, and the recovery of hatch...
متن کاملEmbryo transfer in domestic South American camelids.
Intraspecific and interspecific embryo transfer in domestic South American camelids is developing into a well-established technique. Reports reveal many benefits of using reproductive biotechnologies to allow rapid propagation of alpacas and llamas of high genetic merit (e.g., high fiber quality, preserve color variation). The objective of this review is to provide up-to-date information about ...
